Celebrating Debutantes 2016: Orangeboy by Patrice Lawrence (Playlist + Giveaway)

Happy Monday to all!

We are now on the fourth week of the second wave of #CelebratingDebutantes2016 blog event. And today I’m featuring Orangeboy by Patrice Lawrence. Ever since I saw the colorful cover art of this debut contemporary novel I can’t help but get excited, add the mysterious synopsis, this book is definitely a must read for me. So when Patrice agreed to join our blog event I’m beyond thrilled.

Patrice was so nice as to put together a playlist / soundtrack to help us get in the right mood for this new contemporary novel Orangeboy. Her song choices makes me want to start reading the book soon.

The Orangeboy Playlist

My memory is full of music. I’m not a muso and I have no idea about record companies, release dates or backing guitarists, but songs throw me back in time. Lady Marmalade’s ‘Voulez Vous Couchez Avec Moi, Ce Soir?’ – that’s a family holiday in a village in Italy, age seven, thinking I owned the world. (I had no idea what the words meant though!) Talking Heads’ ‘Psycho Killer’ is harmonising with my mum over a barbecue in the back garden. ‘At the River’ by Grove Armada? That’s a lazy Sunday morning with my own young daughter, playing along with our improvised percussion and pretend trumpet.

I wanted music to shape my protagonist, Marlon’s, life. Like many 16-year-olds, he has to occupy multiple worlds. He’s the anonymous boy at school. He’s the good son of a protective and aspirational mother. He’s the longtime best friend of his sparky neighbour, Tish. But his world is also suffused with grief and fear. His father died when he was young and his brother took a path that led him away from his family. And the fear… it is Marlon’s mother’s fear about the pull of an exciting, dangerous other world.

The playlist spans Marlon’s worlds. There is the funk that connects him to his father. There are the songs that pop up in shopping malls and fairs, that will engrain themselves in Marlon’s memories. And there are the two tracks that aren’t mentioned in Orangeboy, but I know, Marlon would understand.

Patrice Lawrence was born in Brighton, England and brought up in an Italian-Trinidadian household in Mid Sussex. She found her way to east London in the ’90s and lives there with a partner, a teenager and a cat called Stormageddon. She has been writing for as long as she has been reading.
