Interview with Karen Tomlinson

So when you decided to finally pursue writing seriously, did you know what sort of stories you wanted to tell or did you just sort of feel your way? When did you first come up with the idea for A Bond Of Venom and Magic?

I have always adored reading, ever since being a small child. I spent my pocket money on Enid Blyton books but soon outgrew those. I would rifle through my parents old books and read anything I could find. When I was a teenager I discovered fantasy and have loved it ever since. I love that those stories can take me away to another exciting world where people can fly, or have magic to fight the evil villains of the world…it’s great!!. As for writing ABOVAM, it started as a fantasy bedtime story for my twin girls and quickly escalated from there. I have kept some of the character names; Diamond and Prince Jack were in the original, but most of the other characters will materialise in later books. The story has obviously changed dramatically, as my girls were 4 when I first started telling the story, but I always knew where I wanted the end to be. The elements of the original story are there (sorry, can’t share too may spoilers!!) but will be included in the later books.

I love reading fantasy books. It’s such an exciting genre, you can create new worlds without limitations. For you, what’s the best part of writing fantasy? How can you make sure your world seem authentic?

The ‘worlds without limitations’ is absolutely why I love fantasy as a genre, but as an author I still think you have to write in real world elements for your readers to relate to, otherwise it can become too much like hard work for readers to imagine places and creatures, and therefore becomes too difficult to believe in.

Do you have a set of rules for your world? Is there a process you go through that helps define these?

Depends what you mean by a set of rules… My magic system has rules and limitations, but it took me a while to figure out what they were. I like rules in magic systems otherwise there would be no conflict, and conflict is what drives the story forward. As for political systems and hierarchies (or monarchies) I have rules and ideas…some written down and some just in my head, but they are there. I want the different kingdoms in the Goddess and the Guardians series to have individual elements and people—just like our world does.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned while writing A Bond Of Venom and Magic? Any interesting or fun discovery?

Haha! Self-publishing a book is loads of fun and tonnes about discovery!! I have learned so much…even what my dragon name would be! I did a facebook author take over and ran a competition to see what everyone’s dragon name would be…here have a go! Why not join my street team tell me what yours ends up being….I’m Wicked Hellion which I love…. fits me down to the ground…hahaha!

what-is-your-dragon-name

On a more serious note the biggest thing I’ve learned is that writing the book is the easiest bit of becoming an author. Essentially if you choose to go the self-publishing route you are starting a small business- there are many costs- financial, and with sacrificing your time-especially if you work full time too. Marketing is a huge learning curve and I have had to learn from scratch. That being said there is nothing better than looking on those five star reviews and knowing people have enjoyed reading the story you have slaved over for hours and hours…it’s an awesome feeling!

If tomorrow you woke up and found yourself inside the world of A Bond of Venom and Magic what’s the first thing you’ll do?

Oh, this question made me smile…! Honestly….? I’m off to find Hugo and challenge him to a…errmm…duel? *grins* and he can pick me up in those big arms and fly me around for hours with those metallic, gorgeous wings!!

Are you working on any project right now? What should we expect from you in the near future?
Ooh yes! I am working hard on editing book 2 of The Goddess and the Guardians which I am hoping to release Feb/March time 2017! Exciting!! I have also nearly done the first draft of book 3. I have lots of other stories I want to write but I really want to finish this series first. In the near future I have a release day facebook party on the 14th October with some awesome YA authors. Kelly Oram, JZN McCauley, JA Culican and Katy Haye are all joining me to celebrate. It would be fantastic if some of you can come join in too. There will be giveaways and fun with us all…! Check here.

Who is your favourite character in A Bond of Venom and Magic?

This one is so easy for me to answer! Hugo is by far my favourite character. He is physically so strong but emotionally he is unsure of himself. He has been raised in a violent and abusive elite guard’s world. He is one of the best warrior’s in the fae queen’s army. He has many enemies as he has blue wings and any fae with born with wings (and therefore magic) higher than gold level magic normally ‘disappear’ as children. He also has hidden magic and skills and we know that his queen covets him but we are unsure why. He falls for Diamond our seventeen year old heroine in a big way but cannot reconcile who he is and what he does with how he feels about her…But will he in the end…? Who knows? They have a lot to discover about themselves before they can decide…
