Devils Within Movie Cast

Nate Fuller: Tyler Young

The main character, Nate, is tall and thin, but muscular, with a dark side that always simmers beneath the surface, and I think Tyler captures that perfectly.

Brandon Kingsley: Chris O’Neal

Brandon is Nate’s first friend. He’s tall, which helps his basketball game. He’s naturally laid back, but there’s more going on down deep–you just have to earn his trust before he shows that side to you. When I look at Chris, I see those layers that are so important to Brandon’s character.

Dell Clemons: Norman Reedus

Confession: I always had Norman in mind when writing Nate’s uncle, Dell. Dell is a complicated character. He’s closed-off and guarded, but he has a benevolent streak running through him that pops up every now and then. Norman is so good at playing those types of characters. He might also be my celeb crush, haha.

Bev Liu: Liu Wen

Bev is Nate’s uncle’s girlfriend. Liu Wen is a model, not an actor, but soon as I saw her I knew she was Bev. Bev is independent and tough. She doesn’t let many people in, but when she does, she’s fiercely loyal.

Kelsey Sawyer: Katherine Langford

Kelsey is strong and opinionated, and, like Nate, has a dark side. I can totally see Katherine Langford playing her. Not just because she fits the image of Kelsey I had in my head when writing her, but she can look tough too. This picture is the embodiment of Kelsey.

Iria Kingsley: Thandie Newton

Full disclosure: I pictured Debbie Allen when writing Brandon’s mother, but she’s older than Brandon’s mother would be, so if I were casting her in a movie today, I’d go with Thandie Newton. Mrs. Kingsley is a big character. By that I mean her personality fills any room she’s in. She’s warm and loving, and sharp. Not much gets by her. I think Thandie would kill the role.

Dr. James Kingsley: Taye Diggs

Brandon’s dad is a professor who has high expectations for his children. He expects nothing less than their best and pushes them, but it always comes from a place of love. Taye perfectly hits that combination of tough but loving.

Henry Kingsley: Michael B. Jordan

Henry is Brandon’s older brother. Like Brandon, he’s easy-going, but he feels their dad’s pressure more than Brandon does. Michael has that balance of fun-loving but serious that sums up who Henry is.

Bonus:

Dream Director: David Fincher

Fight Club, Gone Girl, Seven. Fincher’s aesthetic would fit the mood of this book SO well.

Dream Film Score: Trent Reznor

Reznor and Fincher have worked together on several movies in the past, and Nine Inch Nails appears on the soundtrack of songs I listened to while writing DEVILS WITHIN. His music would be amazing alongside this story.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

S.F. Henson was born and raised in the deep south. She graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Animal Science, which she put to great use by attending law school. Her law degree has gotten some mileage, though, giving her the experience to write about criminals and other dark, nefarious subjects. She lives beside a missile test range in Huntsville, Alabama with her husband, dog, two oddly named cats, and, of course, the missiles that frequently shake her house.

Killing isn’t supposed to be easy. But it is. It’s the after that’s hard to deal with.

Nate was eight the first time he stabbed someone; he was eleven when he earned his red laces—a prize for spilling blood for “the cause.” And he was fourteen when he murdered his father (and the leader of The Fort, a notorious white supremacist compound) in self-defense, landing in a treatment center while the state searched for his next of kin. Now, in the custody of an uncle he never knew existed, who wants nothing to do with him, Nate just wants to disappear.

Enrolled in a new school under a false name, so no one from The Fort can find him, he struggles to forge a new life, trying to learn how to navigate a world where people of different races interact without enmity. But he can’t stop awful thoughts from popping into his head, or help the way he shivers with a desire to commit violence. He wants to be different—he just doesn’t know where to start.

Then he meets Brandon, a person The Fort conditioned Nate to despise on sight. But Brandon’s also the first person to treat him like a human instead of a monster. Brandon could never understand Nate’s dark past, so Nate keeps quiet. And it works for a while. But all too soon, Nate’s worlds crash together, and he must decide between his own survival and standing for what’s right, even if it isn’t easy. Even if society will never be able to forgive him for his sins.

Like a teen American History X, S.F. Henson’s Devils Within is gut-wrenching, thought-provoking, no-holds-barred look at the plague of white supremacy in contemporary American culture that may have you examining your own soul.

Enjoy checking out Jenn’s casting pick and happy weekend!

Here’s Jenn with her casting pick for The Way to Game the Walk of Shame

Every author imagines how their book would be as a movie someday. Or maybe it’s just me. In fact, I always have my entire movie cast planned out before I even write a single word of the story. Not that I’m crazy or cocky enough to believe that my book would be a movie, but it’s always nice to dream. J Plus it’s how I always plot out my stories.

The first thing I do when I start a new story is work on character bios and find pictures to fit the characters. Sad, happy, laughing, fighting, etc. This helps me connect with the characters and I can plot out the story better when I can visualize them and each scene in my head. It becomes real to me. And I get to spend hours just looking at pictures online and call it ‘research’.

So without further adieu, my movie cast for THE WAY TO GAME THE WALK OF SHAME that I pulled from my very first draft! I know that some of these actors are way too old to play high schoolers now, but since this is my dream cast, in my mind, they’re forever young. They’ve found the secret to the Fountain of Youth. Like Ellen DeGeneres. Or Mario Lopez.

Danielle Panabaker

Taylor Simmons: Medium brown hair with bangs that get in her eyes, dark brown eyes, slightly elfish face. She’s very slim with little to no curves. Medium height. (Actress – Danielle Panabaker)

Nick Zano

Evan McKinley: Tall, but very broad. Muscular. Spiky dark blond hair, dark gray eyes, straight nose aside from the bump at the bridge, large square jaw that’s slightly lopsided. Dimple on one cheek. (Actor – Nick Zano, during the What I Like About You era)

Fun fact – This picture was what helped to inspire the first chapter of THE WAY TO GAME THE WALK OF SHAME

Lucy Hale

Carly Winters: Dark brown almost black hair that’s wavy and falls down her back. Tall and a little stocky, but very fit with curves. Square jaw with pouty lips. Dark eyes. (Actress – Lucy Hale)

Wu ChunBrian Long: Very tall and lanky (like a swimmer) and is of asian descent. He has slightly long black hair that he sweeps to the side, off his forehead. Very straight nose. (Actor – Wu Chun)

Scarlett Pomers

Lauren Tillman: Long curly red hair, icy blue eyes. Straight nose and very fair skin. She’s skinny and medium built like Taylor, but has curves that she doesn’t have. (Actress – Scarlett Pomers)

Zachary Abel

Aaron Fitzgerald: Tall and stocky with dark curly hair. Not quite as broad as Evan, but also muscular and has a way of always towering over people. Green eyes. (Actor: Zachary Abel)

Thank you so much Jenn for sharing to us your casting pick for The Way to Game the Walk of Shame. I’m excited to meet all the characters of your novel especially now with those brilliant actors/actresses above. Love Wu Chun by the way which makes me more excited to meet Brian Long and of course Taylor and Evan too.

Taylor Simmons is screwed.

Things were hard enough when her single-minded dedication to her studies earned her the reputation of being an Ice Queen, but after getting drunk at a party and waking up next to bad boy surfer Evan McKinley, the entire school seems intent on tearing Taylor down with mockery and gossip.

Desperate to salvage her reputation, Taylor persuades Evan to pretend they’re in a serious romantic relationship. After all, it’s better to be the girl who tames the wild surfer than just another notch on his surfboard.

Celebrating Debutantes 2016: The Distance To Home by Jenn Bishop (Movie Cast and Giveaway)

Celebrating Debutantes 2016 Second Wave

I’m super thrilled to have author Jenn Bishop here on the blog today as part of Celebrating Debutantes 2016 event. Jenn will be sharing to us her casting pick for her debut middle grade novel The Distance to Home.

To know more about Jenn Bishop and The Distance to Home, check the author’s bio and book’s description that follows after the guest post, as well as links where to find Jenn and where to buy copies of the book.

Also, don’t forget to check the giveaway at the bottom of this post for a chance to win a signed copy of the book from Jenn.

Here’s Jenn with her casting pick for The Distance to Home

While the odds are that my debut middle grade novel, The Distance To Home, will probably not be made into a movie anytime soon, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t spend a bit of time here and there fantasizing about it. It’s most writers’ dreams to see something they created in their head up on the big screen. So, if it ever does come to pass, here’s my ideal casting. (Also, these people are not allowed to grow up because that would ruin everything!)

Maisie Williams

Quinnen

I’m going to cheat a little here, since this actress is now too old to play Quinnen, but when I was first drafting TDTH, I always had Maisie Williams in my head as I imagined Quinnen. I love her spunk and intensity. (Quinnen is a little less murdery than Arya Stark — juuust a little.)

Maude Apatow

Haley

I think Maude Apatow would make a great Haley.

Gaten Matarazzo

Casey

Like many other kidlit authors, I completely devoured Stranger Things when it appeared on Netflix and from the first instant Gaten Matarazzo appeared on screen I knew he would make the perfect Casey.

Tristan Wilds

Hector

This was a hard one, mostly because my image of Hector in my mind is based more on athletes I’m familiar with than actors. But I think Tristan Wilds comes closest.

EVERWOOD Image #EW04-51-13A-1-4 Pictured: Chris Pratt as Bright Abbott Photo Credit: © The WB/Lance Steadler

Brandon

So, in truth I kind of want to go back in time and have Chris Pratt from his Everwood days play Brandon.

Ansel Elgort

But if a time machine is off the table, I think Ansel Elgort for Brandon could do a pretty good job.

Olivia Colman

Mom

Somehow Mom was the hardest for me to cast! In the end, I settled on Olivia Colman.

Peter Krause

Dad

Peter Krause. Done!

Ellar Coltrane

Zack

Ellar Coltrane would make such a good Zack.

Thank you so much Jenn for sharing to us your casting pick for The Distance to Home. Those brilliant actors/actresses makes me more excited to meet Quinnen and the rest of the characters. I love Maisie Williams from Game of Thrones series and I can imagine her on a different role. I think she is sporty enough to be Quinnen. She is really a brilliant young actress.

Celebrating Debutantes 2016: 100 Days of Cake by Shari Goldhagen (Movie Cast and Giveaway)

Celebrating Debutantes 2016 Second Wave

I’m super thrilled to have author Shari Goldhagen here on the blog today as part of Celebrating Debutantes 2016 event. Shari will be sharing to us her casting pick for her debut YA contemporary novel 100 Days of Cake.

Also, don’t forget to check the giveaway at the bottom of this post. Enjoy reading!

Here’s Shari with her casting pick for 100 Days of Cake

When I’m writing, I really try to invent a character from the ground up, so I don’t usually have a picture of any actual person in mind. Still it’s always fun, when the book is done, to fantasize about who might play the characters in the movie.

Hailee Steinfeld

Molly: Hailee Steinfeld

Molly will be eighteen in a few months, and in some ways she’s grown up and worldly and jaded, but in other ways not so much. She’s got a really flat sense of humor, but she’s also vulnerable. I could Hailee Steinfeld showing those contradictions well.

Chloe Moretz

Veronica: Chloe Grace Moretz

In the book, Molly’s sister has dark hair and is taller than Chloe, but the If I Stay star’s energy seems right. V is a pretty girl, and to a lot of people that’s her identity, but she’s got a bit of an edge and is smarter than people, even her family, give her credit. All that said, she’s still only 15 and not quite ready for the responsibility her mom dumps on her.

Tye Sheridan

Alex: Tye Sheridan

Tye seems to be everywhere, but weirdly I think I’ve only seen him in Mud. Still I can totally see him rocking out—all be it self-consciously—in Alex’s band.

J Lo

Mrs. Bryne: Jennifer Lopez

This definitely wasn’t anything close to the mental picture I had when I was writing her, but now I kind of see Jennifer Lopez as Molly’s mom. Sure she’s ridiculously put together and beautiful and a little cheesy, but she also has this kind of goofy sweetness to her—like I could see J.Lo coming up with the idea that making a cake every day might cheer someone up. And of course she’d be doing the baking in five-inch heels.

 Matthew Rhys

Dr. B: Matthew Rhys

Molly’s psychologist is someone she initially dismissed as some dude in his 30s. But as she comes to rely on him more and more, she realizes that, oh yeah, he’s actually pretty darn hot.      I love Matthew Rhys on The Americans; he does a really great job of making you understand his emotions and motivations even as he’s doing morally complex things. So I’d love to see him as Molly’s therapist.

Camren Bicondova

Elle: Camren Bicondova

With all her causes and righteous rage, Molly’s best friend can be a lot to handle, but she can also be sweet and really, cripplingly insecure when it comes to social interactions. Cameren has some of that toughness, as well as that toughness that’s really just a defense mechanism.

Thank you so much Shari for sharing to us your casting pick for 100 Days of Cake.

Get well soon isn’t going to cut it in this quirky and poignant debut novel about a girl, her depression, an aggressive amount of baked goods, and the struggle to simply stay afloat in an unpredictable, bittersweet life.

Every other senior at Cove High School might be mapping out every facet of their future, but Molly Bryne just wants to spend the rest of the summer (maybe the rest of her life) watching Golden Girls reruns and hanging out with her cute coworker at FishTopia. Some days, they are the only things that get her out of bed. You see, for the past year, Molly’s been struggling with depression, above and beyond industry-standard teen angst. Crushing on her therapist isn’t helping, and neither is her mom, who is convinced that baking the perfect cake will cure her—as if icing alone can magically make her rejoin the swim team or care about the SATs.

Ummm, no, not going to happen.

But when Molly finds out FishTopia is turning into a lame country diner, her already crummy life starts to fall even more out of her control, and soon she has to figure out what— if anything—is worth fighting for. 100 Days of Cake is a quirky and poignant story of a girl, her depression, an aggressive amount of baked goods, and the struggle to simply stay afloat in an unpredictable, bittersweet world.

Celebrating Debutantes 2016: Revenge and the Wild by Michelle Modesto (Movie Cast + Giveaway)

Celebrating Debutantes 2016

I’m super thrilled to have author Michelle Modesto here on the blog today as part of Celebrating Debutantes 2016 event. Michelle will be sharing to us her casting pick for her debut YA novel Revenge and the Wild. I haven’t got the chance to read the book yet but Precious is all high praises for it, which makes me more excited to pick up a copy.

Also, don’t forget to check the giveaway at the bottom of this post for a chance to win a finished copy of Revenge and the Wild.

Here’s Michelle with her casting pick for Revenge and the Wild.

Aubrey Peeples

Westie, I think, was the hardest person to cast. It was between several different actresses, but in the end I thought Aubrey Peeples would make a pretty fierce Westie.

Tye Sheridan

James wears many different masks so I thought Tye Sheridan would be best for that role.

Nicholas Hoult

With Alistair, it’s all about the eyes so I chose Nicholas Hoult

Ezra Miller

Costin is both creepy and charming so I thought Ezra Miller would be perfect for the part

Idris Elba

And, for the brilliant and sophisticated Nigel, I chose Idris Elba

Thank you so much Michelle for sharing to us your casting pick. With all those brilliant actors/actresses I am now more intrigued with Revenge and the Wild. Looking forward meeting Westie, Costin and the rest of the characters.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

The two-bit town of Rogue City is a lawless place, full of dark magic and saloon brawls, monsters and six-shooters. But it’s perfect for seventeen-year-old Westie, the notorious adopted daughter of local inventor Nigel Butler.

Westie was only a child when she lost her arm and her family to cannibals on the wagon trail. Nine years later, Westie may seem fearsome with her foul-mouthed tough exterior and the powerful mechanical arm built for her by Nigel, but the memory of her past still haunts her. She’s determined to make the killers pay for their crimes—and there’s nothing to stop her except her own reckless ways.

But Westie’s search ceases when a wealthy family comes to town looking to invest in Nigel’s latest invention, a machine that can harvest magic from gold—which Rogue City desperately needs as the magic wards that surround the city start to fail. There’s only one problem: the investors look exactly like the family who murdered Westie’s kin. With the help of Nigel’s handsome but scarred young assistant, Alistair, Westie sets out to prove their guilt. But if she’s not careful, her desire for revenge could cost her the family she has now.

This thrilling novel is a remarkable tale of danger and discovery, from debut author Michelle Modesto.
